During the second semester of my freshman year in college, my life changed dramatically after I became the victim of a random act of violence. While walking back to my dorm with my cousin, a group of young men attacked me, leaving me physically wounded. Although I managed to escape and get into an altercation with one of the attackers, the trauma left deep emotional scars. This senseless event triggered a downward spiral in my life. I struggled to cope, failed academically, and was eventually suspended from university. As I battled feelings of hopelessness and despair, I turned to faith for guidance. Through this transformation, I began to reflect on my life and recognize the importance of caring for others. This painful experience ultimately led to my personal growth and a new perspective on life. My eyesight was permanently impacted, but my vision became clear concerning my future. I dedicated the next 20 years of my life to working at Big Brothers Big Sisters in South Carolina and North Carolina, utilizing my time, talent, and treasure to support young people who needed help, guidance, and mentorship, just like the young men who profoundly impacted my life. During that time, I also learned a great deal about philanthropy while serving on the Board of the Community Investment Network, traveling throughout the Southeast, and teaching people how to pool their resources together using the Giving Circle model as a vehicle to make a strategic impact in their communities.
